Deepen Expertise through Professional Learning

The coach should be a role model through their pursuance of professional development which deepens expertise of the ISTE standards.

ISTE explains that coaches as ‘connected learners should intentionally and transparently adopt and demonstrate best practise and identify ways to improve their coaching practice. The ISTE Student standards are: empowered learner, digital citizen, knowledge constructor, innovative designer, computational thinker and creative communicator. The ISTE Educator standards are: learner, leader, citizen, collaborator, designer, facilitator and analyst.’

In Standard 4.2a ISTE explains that coaches should pursue professional learning and intentionally and transparently adopt and demonstrate best practise to serve as a model for educators, leaders and other relevant educational stakeholders. Coaches should model best practise that deepens expertise with the ISTE Standards.’

In 2023 Microsoft launched a coaching course called Microsoft Certified Coach which is run by Insight2Execution The course has been held in the United States and United Kingdom. In London, it was led by Becky Keene and Nathan Wells, and was a great way to learn about coaching and the ISTE standards for coaches. Another way of developing knowledge is to read ‘Transform Learning through Technology: A Guide to the Standards for Coaches’ published by ISTE, to complete ISTE U courses, LinkedIn Learning on ISTE Standards or read ISTE blogs.

Researching the ISTE standards for coaches and then sharing knowledge via blogs using sites such as WordPress or creating videos for communities on Flip can help deepen understanding too. Writing articles for newspapers and magazines such as the Times Educational Supplement can also help deepen understanding of coaching and the ISTE standards.
